  1. GOTTA SING GOTTA DANCE 2 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in "GALAXY, July 1966," story by John Varley.

I have always thought that there is something heroic about all the performers who, in the face of public indifference continue to produce the best that is in them, the ones who are impelled to create their own kind of beauty, and if you are not impressed by their work it doesn't matter to them.

Especially the ones who are really good at their art; the singers, the dancers, the actors, the painters, and so many other kinds of entertainers and performers whose big break never comes along. Who never get to the big stage in spite of the fact that they are as good as the stars you see in the limelight.

My family and I once sat in a restaurant in Clifton, NJ., and while we dined, a solo guitar player sat on a stool and sang to us diners. He was so good he belonged on stage at the "Grand Ole Opry". But I doubt if he even had a CD made of his marvelous music.

I remember walking into a mall not far from my home and seeing paintings made by local artists that were assembled as an art show and displayed in groups throughout the aisles. There was one particular artist whose impressionistic paintings were so good they deserved to be exhibited in a national gallery of art!

But, in spite of this sublime injustice, talented people are all round us. If you've an "eye," you'll see them; those unique ones who just "Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance"! Gotta do their thing!
